Why hire a web designer when you can build a web site yourself? There are a number of reasons; the main one being you want a professional customized site that you are not likely to see somewhere else. You want and need be able to focus on the main part of your business.

What should you expect if you hire a web designer?

You should request to see some previous work and the designer should be able to answer your questions or get answers to your questions. It is okay not to know an answer to a question. Relatively few people know all the answers; especially with technology because it changes all the time. To stay on top, you have to research and know what is out there and what other people in your industry are doing. Customers are paying for your expertise. It takes time to research anything and so a person becomes a professional in the area they spend a lot of time in.

Of course, if you are in business, you’re an expert in your field. You wouldn’t expect your customers to know as much as you do or why would they come to you.  They seek your expertise.

You should expect your designer or the firm to communicate with you regularly and clarify anything you don’t understand. You should expect to understand exactly what you are spending your money on. There is an approval process they will take you through that may seem tedious to you but it is for your protection and theirs to ensure you are getting what you pay for. So in other words, before a designer starts to work, you have to approve it, and then he/she brings back what they think you said and you approve it again.

It is very important to be involved in your design project. Don’t hand it off to the designer with no input as if to say to the firm,”You know what I want, now go do it.” You have to be involved. It wastes your time and theirs and takes much longer to get anything accomplished. Note to designers: before you do any work, be sure and have the customer sign off on it.

A good reason to hire a designer is because a professional web designer or professional web design firm considers all the detail the average person would not think of. Its the detail and the stuff you can’t see behind the scenes that make it all work like it should.

Functionality vs. Design

Don’t confuse functionality with design. A designer designs and a programmer programs. Some designers can program to a limited degree; but few programmers can design, but they can give you a nice clean site that works if you want your site to “do stuff.”

I am a programmer with some design experience so I work with a team and together, we give you the complete package. A complete package involves SEO, Written Copy, Design, Functionality (if you want your site to do something – forms, applications, etc.), Interactivity, and may include Ecommerce.
